Designed for how pupils feel

Calm, inclusive spaces shaped by design decisions, and built while your school stays open.

The challenge

A typical classroom can be too much

Noise, glare, crowded corridors and sudden transitions are everyday pressures for many SEND pupils. The building itself can either add to that or help take it away.

Design decisions

Six decisions that change a pupil's day

01

Calm zones

Why it matters: Pupils need somewhere to step out and regulate before they're overwhelmed. That space has to be designed in, not found later.

02

Acoustics

Why it matters: Hard surfaces carry noise. Absorbent finishes and thoughtful room placement keep sound under control.

03

Lighting

Why it matters: Flicker and glare can trigger distress. Controllable, even light lets staff adjust a room to the pupil.

04

Wayfinding

Why it matters: Clear routes, colour and landmarks make moving between rooms predictable and less stressful.

05

Materials

Why it matters: Robust, low-sensory finishes survive daily use and avoid busy patterns that distract.

06

Sightlines

Why it matters: Staff need to see pupils without hovering. Good sightlines give pupils independence while keeping them safe.

Building while you teach

Your school stays open

We phase works around the timetable and term dates, separate site areas from pupils, and plan noisy work for the right times, with safeguarding built into every stage.

After handover

Looked after, not left behind

Our facilities management team can take on maintenance afterwards, so the spaces keep working as they were designed to.
